Senior Engineer


Role overview

As a Senior Engineer you be managing a wide variety of fire engineering projects in the UK and abroad, where you will be expected to manage quality, time and financial outputs. Key items on your agenda will include building client relationships, reviewing technical documents along with mentoring less experienced engineers.

Reporting to:

  • Associate Director or above

Responsible for:

  • Self, Mentee and Team Management

Mentored by:

  • Principal Engineer/Associate Director

Liaises with:

  • External: Clients and client design team, enforcing authorities
  • Internal: People and Planning Manager, directors, managers and technical colleagues

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience working in the fire safety engineering field
  • Professional registration with Engineering Council through the IFE (or with another Professional Engineering Institution) as a Chartered Engineer or Incorporated Engineer, or similar registration in another discipline consistent with a CEng or IEng

  • Negotiates financial and contractual terms with clients and suppliers

  • Stays in touch with clients between projects

Team Development and Implementation

  • Sets stretching development goals for team members
  • Ensures graduates and engineers have development plans in place and conduct regular reviews with them
  • Seeks opportunities to develop others, either directly or indirectly, including delegation
  • Understands the need to cascade work to the appropriate skill level
  • Uses a coaching style to build confidence and ownership in others
  • Gives clear direction on what needs to be done, by whom and by when
  • Uses a variety of methods in learning interventions and presentations
  • Spots problems in communications between others and positively intercepts
