Project Background

Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is the third tallest hotel in the world and has been described as ‘The world’s only 7 star hotel’.

Burj Al Arab was built on an artificial island 280m from Jumeirah beach and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge. The shape of the structure is designed to mimic the sail of a ship.

This was one of Tenos’ inaugural fire engineering projects following our formation in 1997.


Project Scope

Tenos was appointed to develop a fire safety engineering strategy for the new hotel and oversee this from conceptual design through to completion of construction work.



Using innovative fire engineering techniques, Tenos developed a fire engineering strategy that would overcome several design challenges including:

  • An atrium inside the building measuring over 180m (590ft) in height;
  • A helipad suspended on the 28th floor 212m above sea level;
  • A building built off the coast on a man-made island impacting on emergency access.

Our fire engineering strategy was developed to comply with NFPA codes. We achieved this without compromising architectural design or functionality for our client.

Due to the sheer magnitude and complexity of the building’s design, we were also required to use advanced fire safety engineering (Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)) to demonstrate that the building’s fire strategy was compliant.

Tenos was also appointed to advise on fire safety management for both the Burj Al Arab Hotel and the adjacent Jumeirah Beach Hotel.
